A bird bath that hasn't been cleaned in a week will yield more than a colony of Rotifers. There will also be a variety of fly larvae, mites, bacteria and an assortment of micro scavengers. The Rotifers are easily observed, however, and interesting to watch. They can contract their bodies and move along much like an inch worm, or glide along as if on skates. The "wheel organs" at the top of their heads are constantly swirling, and one can easily see bacteria and other micro matter being guided into their mouths.
