I Know What She Means

Nostalgia is a compelling emotion, more so than love, even, or hate, and it’s almost always bitter sweet . . . . Nostalgia is sneaky. It tries to pass itself off as a journalist reporting back from your past, likes to dress up like the nonfiction section of your public library. Nostalgia likes to watch you root through boxes and dresser drawers, searching for souvenirs and evidence. The ticket stubs, the pressed wedding bouquet, the bundles of old letters in which only you can read the love between the lines. If it sticks around long enough, it rearranges the meanings of the artifacts of your memories and draws conclusions about your past with the certainty of a three-year-old child.

Nostalgia is where memories and desire overlap, and it’s easy to get lost in a place like that.
